Colts unbeaten streak ended by San Diego

Indianapolis' unbeaten streak ended Sunday in a 26-17 loss to a San Diego team desperate to make the playoffs.

In a game of dramatic turnarounds, the Chargers went ahead on a 49-yard field goal by Nate Kaeding with 6:42 left after the Colts erased a 16-0 deficit with a field goal and two touchdowns in a six-minute span of the third quarter. Then Michael Turner clinched it with an 83-yard touchdown run after rookie Luis Castillo sacked Peyton Manning to knock the Colts out of field-goal range.

Reggie Bush wins Heisman

Bush was voted the nation's best college football player in a landslide Saturday night over Texas quarterback Vince Young and USC quarterback Matt Leinart, last year's winner.

Curiously, though Bush was the landslide winner, Vince Young earlier won the Maxwell Award and was the Cingular/ABC Sports Player of the Year which was nationally televised (hosted by Regis) earlier in the day.

Eddie Would Go

It’s a simple saying that most Hawaiians and surfers know by heart. It’s the ultimate proverb of motivation and determination. It is commonly used when a surfer faces a big wave or simply adversity.

Eddie would go.”

Those three words carry more than meaning; they carry dreams and expectations. The saying was adapted in respect for one of the greatest surfing legends off all time, Eddie Aikau, whose life after his death became a myth told among those who once surfed with the fabled man.

A-Rod edges Ortiz, Pujols edges Jones for MVP

NEW YORK (AP) -- Alex Rodriguez won the American League Most Valuable Player award for the second time in three seasons, beating David Ortiz on Monday in a vote that rewarded a position player over a designated hitter.

Rodriguez, in his second season as the New York Yankees' third baseman, received 16 first-place votes, 11 seconds and one third for 331 points from the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Ortiz, the DH for the Boston Red Sox, got 11 firsts and 17 seconds for 307 points. Los Angeles Angels outfielder Vladimir Guerrero received the other first-place vote and was third with 196 points.

[11/15] Albert Pujols started his career with four startling seasons, equal or better than those of many Hall of Famers. Only Barry Bonds always did better -- until this year. Pujols won his first National League MVP award Tuesday, beating Andruw Jones in a close vote that didn't include Bonds, who missed most of the season because of a knee injury.

Larry Bird fan

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A man got a prison term longer than prosecutors and defense attorneys had agreed to -- all because of Larry Bird.

The lawyers reached a plea agreement Tuesday for a 30-year term for a man accused of shooting with an intent to kill and robbery. But Eric James Torpy wanted his prison term to match Bird's jersey number 33.

``He said if he was going to go down, he was going to go down in Larry Bird's jersey,'' Oklahoma County District Judge Ray Elliott said Wednesday. ``We accommodated his request and he was just as happy as he could be.

``I've never seen anything like this in 26 years in the courthouse. But, I know the DA is happy about it.''

John Wooden

As another birthday has come and gone for the Wizard, it becomes that much more important to celebrate the man, not merely for his coaching abilities or for the number of banners he brought to Pauley Pavilion over the years. Wooden is truly an American icon, and his relevance to UCLA goes well beyond the court.

Michelle Wie to turn pro

[9/21/05] While Michelle Wie attends to 11th grade and her short game, another publication is publishing a story announcing she will turn pro and millionaire simultaneously, as soon as next week.

Wie will be on the cover of this week's Golf World magazine. The story cites anonymous sources that claim the 15-year-old will sign endorsement deals with three companies — two are thought to be Nike and Samsung — worth an estimated $8 million. With appearance fees and other endorsements, the magazine estimates she will make $10 million her first year as a pro.

That would make Wie the third-highest paid female athlete in the world, after tennis players Maria Sharapova, reportedly making nearly $17 million, and Serena Williams, at $11 million-plus. Annika Sorenstam, the No. 1 female golfer in the world, is reported to make just more than $5 million. Tiger Woods' deals are estimated at $80 million.

Cody VonAppen is thankful

Eight-and-a-half years ago, vonAppen and his parents saw a fun, happy moment instantly turn to tragedy during a family outing on Kaua'i. And though he barely remembers the details from that day as a 6-year-old, the lesson was ingrained and has given him a perspective many teenagers have yet to appreciate.

Michelle Wie with Dave

Golf phenom Michelle Wie was on top of her game as she went head to head with David Letterman on his show last night, poised, charming and more mature-looking than her 15 years, yet natural and relaxed.

(Note: The following part of the article pertaining to Good Morning America appeared in the print edition and does not appear on the internet. It was apparently written by Gree Kakesako.)

This morning Wie spent four minutes with ABC's Diane Sawyer on "Good Morning America".

Sawyer described Wie as "the great hope for every woman who dreams some day that there will be a woman right there taking on and beathing the men."

Sawyer said she had "to prove" that Wie was "just 15 years old" buy asking her who her heroes were." Presenting Wie with a white T-shirt Saywer asked if she could identify the face.

"Oh yeah," Wie said with a grin, "that's one of my favorites -- Brad Pitt.

"All right, she's 15," Sawyer proclaimed.

Wie was asked what her favorite food was.

Although the telecast's subtitles lited "sushi" along with "hot pink" as her favorite color, Wie responded: "Well, I don't know. This is my first time to New York and I had tried New York pizza. ... It was awesome. I had to get a heavy duty plate because the thing was so huge. It was so good with all that cheese and mushroom."

Noting that she was 6 feet, Sawyer asked: "Are you still growing?"

"No not growing. No more," was Wie's comeback.

Dressed in light sun dress, Wie was asked how she was going to continue balancing her golfing aspirations and her schooling. Wie said: "I have been doing this since forever. I am so used to juggling time and school and golf. When I go back to school (at Punahou) I concentrate on my school. I don't play in any tournaments. School comes first. It's not that hard."
