MLB deal with Cuba

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Major League Baseball has reached an agreement with Cuba's Baseball Federation allowing Cuban players to sign with U.S. teams without needing to defect, MLB Deputy Commissioner Dan Halem told Reuters on Wednesday.

Under the deal, which marks a ray of light in fraught U.S.-Cuban relations, MLB teams will pay the Cuban Baseball Federation a percentage of the bonus awarded to a Cuban player, Halem said.

Cuban players older than age 25 or with six years of service in Cuban leagues will be free to sign with MLB teams, he added. Other players will have to seek permission first. If they defect they will need to face a waiting period of one to two years.

In the past, many Cuban players seeking riches in the big leagues have defected and undertaken dangerous journeys via human traffickers. In Cuba the basic salary for players is $50 per month.

"Our primary objective in this agreement is to provide players from Cuba a path to the major leagues without having to endure the hardships many of our players have already experienced," Halem told Reuters.

Gabriel and Tuitele top All-State team

When Saint Louis brought Cal Lee and staff back to campus five years ago, the cupboard wasn’t exactly bare.

What Lee wanted first and foremost was depth on his defensive line. Two years later, Faatui Tuitele arrived on the varsity, a sophomore with the tools to impact game plans.

Tuitele’s senior season at Saint Louis completed a string of three consecutive Open Division state championships. Coaches and media voted Tuitele the Star-Advertiser All-State defensive player of the year.

Tuitele outpointed teammate Jordan Botelho, a junior linebacker and key contributor for one of the best defensive units in state history.

Other top vote-getters were safety Marist Liufau of Punahou, linebacker Nick Herbig of Saint Louis, defensive lineman Tupu Alualu of Moanalua, defensive tackle Mykah Tuiolemotu of Mililani, and Waipahu defensive backs Deacon Kapea and Zeondre Benjamin.

In all, nine Crusaders were voted to the first team: Tuitele, Quinones, Botelho, Herbig, S Kamo‘i Latu, CB Korvin Feagins, OL Ben Scott, OL Arasi Mose and WR Roman Wilson.

Tuitele, a scholar-athlete raised in Mayor Wright Housing, committed to Washington in November. He turned down offers from 38 other universities. Other island players who have committed to UW are Miki Ah You of Kahuku, Julius Buelow of Kapolei, Sama Paama of Kaimuki and Tim Horn of Punahou.

On the other side, Mililani quarterback Dillon Gabriel was a near-unanimous selection as offensive player of the year.

“It’s amazing. The state of Hawaii will forever be the place I’m most proud of. The football and everything, it is the place that raised me. I am so proud to be from here,” Gabriel said.

With the senior southpaw at the controls, the Trojans captured the OIA Open championship behind the most potent offense in the league. He passed 13 QBs, including Tua Tagovailoa and Timmy Chang of Saint Louis, to become the all-time leader in passing yardage with 9,848 yards. His 105 TD passes are second only to Chang.

His 2018 season included 3,747 yards and 38 TD passes as Mililani went 10-3 and reached the state final. For the year, Mililani racked up 456 points, 35.1 per game. The only teams to limit the Trojans to fewer than 20 points were St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) and Saint Louis, who are Nos. 3 and 14 in the USA Today Super 25 national rankings.

Gabriel doesn’t say a whole lot, but is concise, much like his actions on the field. His process is about eliminating bad decisions. For all the TDs and yards, he’d love to zap the 13 interceptions he threw this season.

Running a hybrid system crafted by Trojans coach Rod York, Gabriel has grasped run-and-shoot concepts along with RPO timing and vision. In early 2017, York hoped Gabriel would get an offer from Hawaii, which happened.

Gabriel also got an offer from Army, committed to West Point, and then decommitted. He currently is weighing offers from Georgia, USC and UCF.

The coach of the year honor went to Bryson Carvalho, who guided Waipahu to the Division I state championship just one season after the Marauders were crowned D-II OIA champions. Carvalho edged Cal Lee in the voting. Other coaches receiving votes were Kui Kahooilihala of Roosevelt, Garret Tihada of Lahainaluna, Philip Rapozo of Kapaa, Kale Ane of Punahou and York.

Fury vs. Wilder

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury fought to a split draw Saturday night, with Wilder retaining his WBC heavyweight title after knocking down his British challenger twice.

Wilder (40-0-1) floored Fury (27-0-1) in the ninth and 12th rounds, yet Fury clearly outboxed Wilder for large portions of the remainder of their entertaining showdown at Staples Center.

Fury looked finished when Wilder put him flat on his back with two minutes left in the fight, but he rose and made it to the bell.

"We gave each other all we've got," Wilder said. "We're the best in the world. The respect was mutual."

Judge Robert Tapper scored the fight 114-112 for Fury, while Alejandro Rochin favored Wilder 115-111. Judge Phil Edwards and The Associated Press scored it a 113-113 draw, with Wilder's knockdowns compensating for Fury's superior technique.

"I hope I did you all proud after nearly three years out of the ring," Fury said. "I was never going to be knocked out tonight. I showed good heart to get up. I came here tonight and I fought my heart out."

While both men thought they won, neither was overly upset by the verdict in front of a frenzied Hollywood crowd. They embraced warmly and immediately talked about a rematch in the spring.

"One hundred percent we'll do the rematch," Fury said. "We are two great champions. Me and this man are the two best heavyweights on the planet."

The bout was a rare meeting of two unbeaten heavyweight stars in their apparent primes, with both fighters putting aside caution and the typical squabbles over money or belts to stage one of the best matchups in the glamour division's recent history.

Willie McCovey

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Willie McCovey, the sweet-swinging Hall of Famer nicknamed "Stretch" for his 6-foot-4 height and those long arms, died Wednesday. He was 80.

The San Francisco Giants announced McCovey's death, saying the fearsome hitter passed "peacefully" on Wednesday afternoon "after losing his battle with ongoing health issues."

A first baseman and left fielder, McCovey was a .270 career hitter with 521 home runs and 1,555 RBIs in 22 major league seasons, 19 of them with the Giants. He also played for the Athletics and Padres.

McCovey made his major league debut at age 21 on July 30, 1959, and played alongside the other Willie -- Hall of Famer Willie Mays -- into the 1972 season before Mays was traded to the New York Mets that May.

McCovey batted .354 with 13 homers and 38 RBIs on the way to winning the 1959 NL Rookie of the Year award. The six-time All-Star also won the 1969 NL MVP and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1986 after his first time on the ballot.

"You knew right away he wasn't an ordinary ballplayer," Hall of Famer Hank Aaron said, courtesy of the Hall of Fame. "He was so strong, and he had the gift of knowing the strike zone. There's no telling how many home runs he would have hit if those knees weren't bothering him all the time and if he played in a park other than Candlestick."

McCovey narrowly beat out Mets pitcher Tom Seaver for the 1969 MVP award. McCovey led the NL in home runs (45) and RBIs (126) for the second straight year, batting .320 while also posting NL bests with a .453 on-base percentage and .656 slugging percentage. He was walked 121 times, then drew a career-high 137 free passes the next season.

When San Francisco opened its new waterfront ballpark in 2000, the cove beyond the right-field fence was named "McCovey Cove" in appreciation of all he did for the organization. There's a statue of McCovey's likeness on the other side of the water from where those splash hits land.

when Florida State walked off the court

By all accounts, the 1971-72 campaign was a banner season for the Florida State Seminoles. The team won a school-record 27 games and advanced to the NCAA Tournament championship, falling to John Wooden and his vaunted UCLA Bruins, 81-76. Led by All-American forward Ron King, the Seminoles eclipsed the 100-point mark seven times that year, including a 134-65 home win over Valdosta State. In the NCAAs, they beat traditional powerhouses Kentucky and North Carolina on their way to the title game against the Bruins.

But they didn’t last 10 minutes with the Hawaii Rainbows.

brawl follows Khabib's win over McGregor

LAS VEGAS – A bout that was made when Conor McGregor attacked a bus ended with lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov leaping over the Octagon at T-Mobile Arena after a brilliant performance in the main event of UFC 229 and brawling with Dillon Danis, a member of McGregor’s team, at cageside.

Nurmagomedov submitted McGregor with a rear naked choke at 3:03 of the fourth before a melee broke out at cageside.

According to UFC broadcaster Joe Rogan, Danis was taunting Nurmagomedov from cageside, though Rogan couldn’t hear what Danis said.

A huge scrum of people got together near the Octagon, including police officers, members of both teams and members of the Nevada Athletic Commission. It was against the fence where fans were seated. Nurmagomedov and Danis exchanged punches as people attempted to separate them.

After the scrum was broken up after about 10 minutes, UFC president Dana White said to Nurmagomedov in the cage, “People are going to get arrested tonight.” Nurmagomedov responded, “Put me in jail. No problem.”

White said to Nurmagomedov, “This is what I believe: If I put this belt on you, everybody’s going to start throwing s–t into the Octagon.”

Not long after Nurmagomedov went after Danis, a man in a black T-shirt got into the Octagon and threw a least one punch at McGregor. Then, a man in a red T-shirt jumped over the cage and landed four punches on McGregor. It did not appear that McGregor ever left the cage. According to White, three members of Nurmagomedov’s team were arrested.

Ball in the Family

[8/24/18] Four months after LaVar Ball announced his sons LaMelo and LiAngelo were quitting Lithuania’s National Basketball League with two games left in the season because “I just didn’t get along with the coach,” the BC Prienai club and coach Virjginijus Seskus are firing back — and pulling no punches.

In a press release entitled, “Big Baller Brand tried to destroy the club,” the team claimed “the club and its goals were merely a joke to the BBB, who were there only to breathe life into their dying TV show.”

Yikes. Tell us how you really feel, Lithuania.

Prienai coach Seskus on Ball family: „When our relationship got worse, we saw they were unconcerned. It looked like they were cheering for opposing team. I respect Gelo a lot – he is a good kid. But his father disturbs them to go forward.”

Coach Seskus on LaMelo: "It will be hard for him if somebody won't push him to work. He is a talent, but they're lazy. In Prienai we tried to make them eat well & healthy but they did whatever they wanted. If we didn't watch them closely, they weren't making effort in exercising"

LiAngelo, 19, averaged 12.6 points on 42.5 percent shooting in 21.7 minutes per game, mostly off the bench, over 14 appearances for Vytautas, according to RealGM.com. The 16-year-old LaMelo appeared in just eight games, averaging 6.5 points on 26.8 percent shooting in 12.8 minutes, per RealGM. Prienai finished last and was relegated to the Lithuanian basketball league’s second division last season.

Hawaii wins World Series

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. >> After striking out his 15th batter to end the game, Hawaii’s Aukai Kea pumped his fists and let out a shout for all to hear.

Within seconds, Kea’s teammates sprinted to the pitcher’s mound to congratulate their team’s ace, hugging and pounding on him. Hawaii shut out Georgia 3-0 and Kea’s complete game sealed its berth in the Little League World Series championship.

“I just pitched my heart out,” Kea said. “Did as best I could.”

About 60 feet away, the Hawaii faithful chanted “Hon-o-lulu!” in the stands over the first-base dugout. As his home state dealt with record rainfall from Tropical Storm Lane, Kea took full note of the fans’ energy.

“When I was on the mound, I could hear them and I was like, ‘That’s why we’re here. That’s who we’re playing for. We’re playing for home, playing for Hawaii,’ ” Kea said.

After claiming the U.S championship, Hawaii will face South Korea — which beat Japan 2-1 to win the International championship — at 9 a.m. today in the LLWS championship. The game will be shown live on KITV.

The Honolulu team won the United States championship thanks to Kea’s dominant performance. He struck out 15 and didn’t allow a runner past first base. Kea and Georgia pitcher Connor Riggs-Soper were locked in a pitcher’s duel before the local kids broke through for one run in the fourth on a two-out single by pinch hitter John De la Cruz that plated Hunter Nishina.

Clark Kent defeats Michael Phelps

SALINAS, Calif. — Clark Kent may be Superman, but a 10-year-old boy who shares his name has the powers of Aquaman.

At the Far West International Swimming Championship Sunday, Clark Kent Apuada placed first in all seven events he swam in. But in the 100 meter butterfly, he broke a record set by Olympian Michael Phelps at the same meet back in 1995.

"Most people just call me Clark, but now, when I beat Michael Phelps' record, they start calling me Superman," he said. "I thought to myself yeah if I had positive thoughts, positive things would happen."

Courmier KOs Miocic

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Daniel Cormier knocked out the UFC heavyweight champion, argued with a professional wrestler and left the octagon dancing with glee and perfect balance, thanks to one championship belt on each arm.

There will never be another Saturday night like it for the 39-year-old former amateur wrestler who stands on the pinnacle of the UFC.

Make that two pinnacles.

Cormier added the heavyweight championship to his light heavyweight title when he stopped Stipe Miocic in dramatic fashion during the first round of their superfight at UFC 226.

Late in a lively opening round, Cormier (21-1, 1 no-contest) abruptly flattened the UFC's long-reigning heavyweight kingpin with a right elbow out of a clinch. He finished Miocic (18-3) on the ground with 27 seconds left in the round, landing several shots to the defenseless champion's head.

Cormier became the second fighter in UFC history to hold two championship belts simultaneously. Conor McGregor was the UFC's featherweight champ in 2016 when he took the lightweight title from Eddie Alvarez.

"I was a heavyweight for a long time, and I left the division," Cormier said. "I never knew what I could become, but tonight I got the answer. I'm a two-division champion, baby!"

Cormier, a former Strikeforce heavyweight champion who moved down in weight to avoid fighting a good friend, has never lost to anyone except Jon Jones, the star-crossed former light heavyweight champion who beat him twice. The second victory last summer was changed to a no-contest when Jones failed a doping test, and he remains out of the sport.

Cormier is on top of it with less than a year to go until reaching his self-imposed retirement age of 40.

"I'm 39 years old, and I've been second many times," Cormier said. "But today, I have accomplished everything I ever wanted. From crying in this octagon almost a year ago, to leaving as the heavyweight champion."

After beating Miocic, Cormier engaged in a bit of clearly planned theatrics with Brock Lesnar, the professional wrestler and former UFC heavyweight champion. Cormier called Lesnar into the cage, and Lesnar shoved Cormier in the chest while the fighters traded insults to hype a potential future bout.

"Push me now, (and) you're going to sleep later," Cormier yelled at Lesnar. "Your days are in the past. In the stone age."

Lesnar, likely the biggest pay-per-view draw in UFC history, is widely expected to return to MMA early next year. White confirmed he'll book Cormier against Lesnar as soon as Lesnar has completed the requisite drug testing, but Cormier said he would like to defend his 205-pound title later this year before fighting Lesnar.

Jim Leahey retires

Jim Leahey, who painted a vivid word picture of Hawaii sports for listeners over 60 years as the state’s most recognizable radio and television broadcaster, confirmed his retirement.

“Yes, it is official,” Leahey, 75, told the Star-Advertiser today.
Leahey first disclosed his intention over the weekend at a roast for long-time boss and broadcast partner Rick Blangiardi.

“I just want to quietly go away,” said Leahey, whose final segments behind the mic came as the play-by-play broadcaster for University of Hawaii baseball on KKEA radio last month.

“I enjoyed working with Josh Pacheco and Scottie Robbs, but I’m 75 years old now and don’t want to take a position from guys who are coming up and working hard,” Leahey said after conferring with his wife, Toni.

“It has been a lot of seasons, a lot of memories,” said Leahey, who began working alongside his father, Chuck, in the 1960s and later teamed up with his son, Kanoa.

In the course of a career that saw him alternate between radio and TV — and sometimes do simulcasts across both platforms — Leahey has appeared on KGMB, KIKU, KHNL, KITV, KHET and cable. He also did preseason NFL Seahawks games for a Seattle station.

When Blangiardi took over independent station KIKU (which became KHNL) and masterminded a deal to televise UH sports on a scale of more than 100 events a year, he hired Leahey to do play-by-play. “Some years I was doing as many as seven different UH sports a year,” Leahey said. “It was great.”

A highlight? “The 56-14 victory over Brigham Young (in 1989),” said Leahey said. “BYU came in arrogant, as always. After what was it —not winning for 10 straight years against BYU? — damn that was good. I think it was the best game that UH ever played. The sound, the excitement of that crowd, is something you’ll always remember.”

In his call of the game, Leahey exclaimed, “This is better than statehood!

Bruno Sammartino

Bruno Sammartino, an Italian immigrant who was heavyweight champion of the World Wide Wrestling Federation for a record 11 years in the 1960s and ′70s, long before the federation admitted that its matches were scripted and largely choreographed entertainment shows, died on Wednesday at 82.

His death was announced on the website of WWE, the organization also known as World Wrestling Entertainment, a successor of the World Wide Wrestling Federation. No other details were provided, but a family friend and former wrestling announcer, Christopher Cruise, told The Associated Press that Sammartino had been hospitalized for two months. Sammartino lived in Pittsburgh.

In an era when the sports world, except for some die-hard wrestling fans, knew that professional matches were staged dramatizations, with heroes and villains, story lines and beefcake actors shamming the violence, Sammartino was one of the most popular performers in the business. He wrestled in Australia, Spain, Mexico, Canada and Japan, and often drew gates of 20,000 at Madison Square Garden, where he had more than 200 matches.

Unlike many heavies on the pro wrestling circuits, he was a soft-spoken, gentlemanly connoisseur of grand opera, especially Verdi. And for one who had bench-pressed 565 pounds as an amateur, he was relatively small: under 6 feet tall and a trim 260 or 270 pounds, with bulging pectorals and biceps and a big head. He looked tiny beside giant rivals like Haystacks Calhoun, who topped 600 pounds.

He sometimes made $150,000 a year, headlining cards featuring the “bad guys” — Killer Kowalski, Hans Mortier, Waldo von Erich, Ivan Koloff, Gorilla Monsoon, Professor Toro Tanaka and George (the Animal) Steele. Feuds and insults fueled the publicity hype, and outrages in the ring sent crowds wild. Every wrestler had a gimmick: ethnicity or nationality, the personas of cowboys, lumberjacks or farmers, and sports reporters went along with the fun.

In 1959, Sammartino signed a $250-a-week contract with Capitol Pro Wrestling, owned by Mr. McMahon and Joseph Mondt, and wrestled in Pennsylvania, New York and other states. Mr. McMahon and Mr. Mondt later formed the World Wide Wrestling Federation and awarded its heavyweight title to “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers in April 1963.

A month later, Sammartino faced Rogers at Madison Square Garden for the title. Rogers was supposed to win. But in a story often told in wrestling circles, Sammartino broke the bad news to him in the ring.

“We can do this the easy way, or the hard way,” Sammartino said. He pinned Rogers in 48 seconds, launching his championship career.

After his second reign ended in 1977, he wrestled on tours. He retired in 1981 from full-time professional wrestling, although he later appeared in exhibition matches. In 2013, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. He had declined induction several times, dissatisfied with what he called lurid story lines, over-the-top theatrics and drug and steroid abuse by professional wrestlers.

2017-2018 Basketball All-America team

Oklahoma 's Trae Young took college basketball by storm, leading the nation in scoring and assists. Deandre Ayton played his one season at Arizona with power and athleticism few could match. Versatile big man Marvin Bagley III made his lone year a Duke a memorable one.

The talented trio made history Tuesday by being named to the AP All-America team, the first time three freshmen were named to the first team in its 70-year history.

They were joined by Villanova 's Jalen Brunson and Kansas guard Devonte' Graham on the team selected by the same 65-member national media panel that selects the weekly AP Top 25.

no. 16 beats no. 1

CHARLOTTE — And on the 136th attempt, the basketball gods relented.

A No. 16 seed has finally beaten a No. 1 in the NCAA tournament. And even if you could see it coming somewhere, some time, in the future, it wasn’t supposed to be this.

College basketball has never seen a bigger upset than Maryland-Baltimore County 74, Virginia 54.

But it happened Friday night in the South Regional, taking down a team that just last week completed a golden 31-2 season with both the ACC regular season and conference tournament titles. And it was executed by team ranked 188th in the country according to the Ken Pomeroy efficiency ratings, a team that lost to the likes of Stony Brook and was beaten 44 points by Albany in the middle of its conference season.

It’s too improbable for words, except that it happened.

“Unbelievable — it’s really all you can say,” UMBC coach Ryan Odom said.

Wie wins in Singapore

SINGAPORE >> Michelle Wie holed a 36-foot putt from off the green on the final hole to win the Women’s World Championship by one stroke today and capture her first LPGA tournament since the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open.

With four players in contention to win on the last hole, Wie managed to separate herself from the pack when she drained her lengthy birdie putt on the 72nd hole at the Sentosa Golf Club for a final round of 7-under 65 to finish at 17-under 271.

The 28-year-old from Honolulu, who led the tournament after three rounds a year ago before fading on the last day, leaped into the air and clenched her fist in celebration as the ball disappeared into the bottom of the cup.

But she still faced an anxious wait before being declared the champion.

“Winning is everything. I mean, there is no better feeling than when you think you sink that winning putt. It’s a high, for sure,” Wie said.

“You go out there, and it’s this feeling that gets you going. It’s this feeling that makes you practice. It’s that winning putt that makes you practice for hours and hours and hours, and even the hard times, it gets you going back. You know that good feeling is on the other side.”

It was Wie’s fifth LPGA Tour victory and the first since winning the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open.
